I did things a little bit out of order here, as you may have noticed, and read one of the later books first, before I found this one in an opshop.
Mma Precious Ramotswe is making sense of life after her father dies and leaves her a herd of cattle, and decides to start a business. This book is a little less congruent than the later ones- there are multiple short cases that she takes on, interspersed with memories of her father and life growing up. While this kind of makes sense for the first book in a series- to give a broader overview, I think I like the later books where there is one or two main narratives driving the story forwards.
Overall its still a short, fun, easy read, that evokes the slower, more casual atmosphere of a small Botswana city/town.
